  1. Clean and sanitise your equipment, then mash the milled Distiller's Malt in the Grainfather with the distiller's enzymes, using the sparge water heater for sparge water.
  2. Chill the whiskey wort through the counterflow chiller into the stainless steel fermenter, check the gravity and pitch the whiskey yeast.
  3. When fermentation is finished, clear the wash with Turbo Clear and syphon it back into the Grainfather.
  4. Attach the copper dome top and pot condenser, connect the cooling water and distil, collecting into the 5L jug and checking strength with the alcometer.
  5. Age the spirit on the French oak spirals. Full recipe: how to make malt whiskey from grain.

FAQ

How is making whiskey in the Grainfather different from brewing beer?

The process is similar: you mash grain to make a wort and ferment it. Instead of packaging it as beer, you attach the dome and condenser and distil the fermented wash.

Why a copper dome top?

Copper reacts with the vapour to help concentrate flavours and aromas and remove unwanted sulphur compounds, for a smoother, richer spirit.

Will the pot condenser strip out flavour?

No. The Alembic condenser retains flavour rather than stripping it out by refluxing, which suits whiskey.

Can I use my own grain bill?

Yes. The kit includes a grain kit to get you started plus extra consumables so you can make whiskey with a custom grain bill.

Fantastic kit

"Great kit, love using the Grainfather, and awesome price! Need to add a longer mash paddle and maybe a test tube for gravity testing. Good job, fast delivery, good communication and great service."

Q&A

Hi, I'm fairly new to all this distilling but have been doing my research & am wondering why the pictures to this advertisement have more equipment in them than on the equipment list of included items.
Hi Lisa, there are two images here for the different options. The first is with the standard stainless steel fermenter, and the second is for if you upgrade to temperature controlled fermentation with the conical fermenter and glycol chiller where those two items are added to the image. Otherwise I have spotted some pH strips in the photo that aren't included anymore because they are not needed, the old recipe for this kit needed you to measure the pH level but the new recipe doens't require this so these aren't included anymore. I hope that helps! Please get back to us if you have anymore questions
How much drinkable whiskey do you get from one grainfather production?
Hi Marius, it vastly depends on the grains and enzymes you use and your cuts, around 6L would be average, could be as much as 8L or even as little as 4L
Hi there, I am really new to this entire process and am in the beginning stages of looking at making my own whisky. How many liters of whisky do you get when using the WHISKEY DISTILLERY KIT: Grainfather with Copper Alembic Dome Top and Pot Condenser? Many thanks Marius
Hi Marius, looks like we missed this question the first time! As mentioned it vastly depends on the grains and enzymes you use and your cuts, around 6L would be average, could be as much as 8L or even as little as 4L
