Rakau is a triploid from New Zealand, specially bred and selected for its unique dual purpose brewing qualities and characteristics. It was re-released in 2007 by the New Zealand hop breeding program and has since become widely established under conventional cultivation. The breeder describes it as having a big, fruit-forward character that encompasses "the whole orchard". With a 10-11% AA, it's a clean and effective bittering hop, but it truly shines when used in later additions for maximum fresh fruit aroma. Myrcene oil, which makes up 56% of the total oils, imparts flavors and aromas of apricot, plum, mango, pear, and other stone fruits. Hints of lime and pine can also be detected. Rakau is the perfect fit for pale ales and will elevate any brew.
