A Russian imperial stout in a cube, for a brewer who wants a big, dark, long-keeping beer without spending a day on a six-malt mash. It starts at 1.090, which is where the near-10% strength comes from.
That gravity is the reason this one asks more of you than a session ale does. A wort this dense needs a large, healthy pitch of yeast to finish out, so plan on three sachets rather than one, and give it time and a stable temperature.
Specifications
- Wort volume: 16.5 L
- Original gravity: 1.090, no dilution recommended
- ABV: close to 10%
- Bitterness: 72 IBU
- Style: Russian imperial stout
- Hops: Warrior for bittering, East Kent Goldings at 10 minutes and flameout
- Malt: ale malt, chocolate, roast barley, Carafa Special 1, Caraaroma, Caramunich Type II
What you get
- 16.5 L of pre-boiled, sealed wort in a cube
- No yeast — three sachets are recommended for a wort this strong
There is no mash and no boil. Tip the wort into a sanitised fermenter, pitch your yeast and hold a steady temperature until fermentation finishes. Nottingham and other neutral high-gravity ale strains suit it. No dilution is recommended, so what is in the cube is what you ferment.
