This essence calculator tells you how many bottles of spirit or liqueur essence you need for the amount of finished drink you want to make. Each essence is made to flavour a set volume, for example a Top Shelf spirit essence makes 2.25L (three 750mL bottles). Divide the litres you want by that yield and round up. Yields differ between ranges and sometimes between flavours, so always check the label of the essence you buy.
Worked example
One 8L Air Still wash runs through the Air Still twice, giving enough spirit for about 2L of finished drink, so one Top Shelf spirit essence (2.25L) covers it. A T500 batch makes about 8L of 40% spirit, which needs four Top Shelf spirit essences (4 × 2.25L = 9L). To make 3L of liqueur you need three 1.125L liqueur essences.
How to use an essence
- Dilute your carbon-filtered neutral spirit to the strength the essence asks for. The dilution calculator works out the water.
- Shake the essence well and add it to the spirit.
- Top up to the volume on the label, seal and shake.
- Leave it a few days for the flavour to settle before drinking.
FAQ
Can I use half a bottle for a smaller batch?
Yes. Use the essence in proportion: half the essence for half the volume. Seal the rest and store it in a cool, dark place.
Do liqueur essences need anything else?
Many do. Top Shelf liqueurs are made with a liqueur base or sugar, and cream liqueurs with a cream base. Check the instructions on the essence.
Why do yields vary in the same range?
Some flavours are made stronger or weaker by design, especially liqueur-style and flavoured essences. The yield on the label is the one to follow.
