Nurtured in New Zealand, the triploid aroma hop Pacifica, also known as Pacific Hallertau, emerged from open pollination breeding of the German hop Hallertauer Mittelfrüher. This hop, released in 1994 by HortResearch, New Zealand, quickly gained recognition after successful brewing trials. Like its predecessor, Pacifica is renowned for its aromatic qualities. With moderate cohumulone levels and a higher amount of caryophyllene, it boasts a spicy, floral aroma. Citrus notes are also present, and it has been described to impart orange fragrances when added late to the boil. Sierra Nevada brewery featured Pacifica in their Southern Hemisphere Harvest fresh hops ale in April 2014, using it as a bittering addition and pairing it with Southern Cross and Motueka as finishing hops.
